The Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU) and the Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) stands in unwavering solidarity with the dedicated members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) as they take courageous action in their strike for fair wages, safe working conditions, job security, and the protection of vital public services. This strike is not just about postal workers—it is about the dignity of all workers, the defense of our public services, the right to free and fair collective bargaining, and the fight against corporate greed that prioritizes profit over people.
CUPW members have long been at the forefront of advocating for workers’ rights and quality public services. Their demands for decent wages and benefits, protections against overwork, and investments in modern, environmentally-friendly infrastructure are not only reasonable, but essential in a time of rising living costs.
Postal workers provide an indispensable service to communities across Canada, connecting people and businesses alike, even in the most remote areas. Their commitment has been evident time and time again, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they went above and beyond to serve Canadians under extraordinary pressures.
It is unacceptable that these workers are now forced to strike to receive the basic respect and compensation they deserve. Instead of meeting these demands in good faith, Canada Post and the federal government have prioritized austerity measures and concessions that erode workplace safety, job security, and quality service.
The CCU and PPWC call on Canada Post to address CUPW’s demands meaningfully and equitably. We also urge the federal government to fulfill its role as a protector of public services and workers’ rights by supporting CUPW members, rather than undermining their collective actions through legislation or other coercive measures.
Workers across Canada know that this fight is part of a broader struggle. When postal workers win, it sets a precedent for all workers fighting for fairness, dignity, and the protection of public services. The CCU and PPWC will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with CUPW members, providing our support through advocacy, mobilization, and solidarity actions until their demands are met.
