The Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) is deeply concerned about the harmful impact Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canadian exports will have on workers, communities, and the economy. These measures, if implemented, would strike at the heart of industries that sustain livelihoods across Canada, disproportionately affecting working people.
Canada and the United States share one of the largest trade relationships in the world, with over 75% of our exports heading south of the border. Tariffs targeting key sectors like forestry, agriculture, and manufacturing would increase costs for US consumers and businesses while crippling Canadian producers. For example, tariffs on softwood lumber would no doubt hurt the forestry sector, a vital source of employment in British Columbia and beyond. This will lead to even greater economic insecurity for thousands of families.
The PPWC urges the Canadian government to stand firm against these unjust tariffs, defend our industries, and protect workers. We also call on unions and allies in the US to oppose divisive policies that harm workers on both sides of the border. Solidarity and fair trade practices — not destructive tariffs — are the way to build a prosperous and equitable future. Together, we must resist actions that prioritize political posturing over the well-being of workers and their families.
