The Public and Private Workers of Canada extends our warmest wishes of solidarity and a Happy New Year to our members and to working people in every region of the country. A new year is both a time for reflection and a call to action—an opportunity to honour the progress we have made together and to prepare for the challenges ahead.
The gains working people enjoy today did not come easily. Through years of struggle and determination, unions like PPWC have helped secure safer workplaces, fairer wages, pensions, benefits, and a voice on the job. In the forest sector and beyond, union members have fought to protect skilled work, local communities, and the principle that workers deserve respect and security. These achievements are a testament to what is possible when workers stand united.
At the same time, we enter this year clear-eyed about the challenges before us. Workers’ and union rights continue to face pressure from corporate interests, deregulation, and short-term decision-making that puts profits ahead of people and communities. In the forest industry, jobs and communities are threatened by mill closures, raw log exports, and a lack of long-term, sustainable planning. Protecting good-paying, unionized jobs must remain a top priority.
The PPWC is committed to fighting for a strong, sustainable forest industry that supports workers, respects Indigenous rights, and protects the environment for future generations. Environmental sustainability and good jobs are not opposing goals—they go hand in hand. A just transition must ensure that workers are not left behind as we address climate change and resource stewardship.
In the year ahead, we will continue to stand up for fairness, solidarity, and the dignity of work. Together in the New Year, we can defend what we have built, confront the challenges before us, and shape a future that is fairer, greener, and more secure for all working people.
