The Public and Private Workers of Canada is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU) Vice President Chris McCann, who was taken from us much too early at the age of 52. Chris was a dedicated labour union activist and fighter for social justice throughout his entire life. He was recently elected president of the Association of Employees Supporting Education Services (AESES). Many PPWC sisters and brothers befriended him throughout the years and enjoyed working with him on a variety of issues.
Our thoughts are with his partner of more than 25 years, Karey, and their three children, Sarah, Natalie and Calvin. And we would like to extend our support to our sisters and brothers in the CCU throughout Canada who had the district pleasure of knowing such an exceptional individual. Thank you, Chris, for being such a great friend and comrade. We will miss you.

Dear Friends,
It is with a heavy heart we must announce that Chris McCann, Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU) Vice President and President of the Association of Employees Supporting Education Services (AESES), has passed away suddenly at the age of 52. His untimely departure has left a profound void in the hearts of family, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his life.
What can a union possibly say about a dear friend and fallen comrade who was taken from us far too early? Chris McCann was a steadfast, dedicated fighter for workers’ rights and social justice, deep down to the very core of his being.
Chris became active in the CCU when AESES joined our association in December 2016, and what a contribution he made to our family of democratic, independent unions and its members throughout the country.
Chris’ work and leadership within the CCU were characterized by his youthful activism, his pursuit and thoughtful advocacy of new, progressive values and ideas, and his powerful commitment to organizing the unorganised wherever they may be.
Despite enormous struggles faced by working people and unions here in Canada and throughout the world, Chris always maintained a positive outlook on life and the future, one that was contagious and translated into the hearts and minds of those who worked alongside him.
Beyond his professional achievements, Chris was deeply committed to various social justice causes. He actively participated in campaigns addressing income inequality, health care, affordable housing, and accessibility to education. His voice was a powerful presence in the Confederation of Canadian Unions and the broader community, advocating for policies that uplifted marginalized peoples.
Chris was a joy to work with. He was gifted with an Irish sense of humour, a spirited, quick wit, and a so-called “gift of the gab” that always shined through, even during the most challenging of times. When Chris spoke, people listened. When he entered a room, he filled it.
His memory will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps, and all of us, in working together to create a better Canada, and a better world.
The life led by Chris McCann is a testament to the enormous difference just one person can make. Rest in peace, brother Chris. We will do our absolute best to ensure your perseverance and dedication live on in all of us.
