The Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) strongly condemns US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian products beginning February 1. These tariffs will put Canadian workers and industries at risk, threatening jobs, wages, and economic stability. As a union that represents thousands of workers across forestry, services, and other key sectors, we refuse to stand by while unfair trade policies harm our members and communities.
Trump’s aggressive and protectionist trade stance has already proven disastrous in the past. His previous tariffs on aluminum and softwood lumber seriously hurt Canadian industries, leading to job losses and economic hardship. Now, by reintroducing such measures, he is reigniting economic tensions that will disrupt supply chains and further harm working people on both sides of the border. These tariffs are not about fairness. They are about political posturing at the expense of hardworking Canadians.
The PPWC will stand firmly against these tariffs by advocating for stronger government action. We demand the Canadian federal government respond decisively, pushing back through diplomatic and economic measures to protect Canadian jobs. We will also stand in solidarity with other unions and labour organizations across North America to resist policies that prioritize corporate and political interests over workers’ well-being.
Our union will not let Canadian workers become collateral damage in Trump’s trade war. We call on all members to stay informed, get involved, and support efforts to resist these unfair tariffs. Now more than ever, we must stand united to defend good jobs, fair trade, and a stronger, more just economy for all.
