The Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) stands resolutely in defense of its members and all Canadian workers in light of President Donald Trump’s recent decision to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%.
This new round of tariffs has been met with strong opposition from Canadian leadership. Prime Minister-designate Mark Carney has condemned the tariffs as an attack on Canadian workers and businesses, emphasizing the detrimental impact on both economies.
The PPWC echoes this sentiment, recognizing that such tariffs threaten the livelihoods of countless Canadians employed in the steel and aluminum sectors. In response to the escalating trade tensions, Ontario Premier Doug Ford imposed a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the U.S. However, following discussions with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Ontario suspended this surcharge, signaling a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.
The PPWC supports such diplomatic efforts and urges both federal and provincial governments to continue seeking resolutions that protect Canadian industries and workers. The union also calls for the exploration of new markets and the strengthening of domestic manufacturing capabilities to reduce reliance on external economies.
Moreover, the PPWC stands in solidarity with other labour organizations who have also called for an end to tariffs and Trump’s destructive trade war. This shared perspective underscores the importance of fair trade policies that benefit workers on both sides of the border.
